As Malaysia takes steps to regulate social media firms under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) guidelines, what can users expect? The Online Safety Act 2026 (ONSA) aims to create a safer online environment for Malaysians by imposing duties on social media companies with at least eight million users in the country.

A Safer Environment Ahead

While ONSA does not impose any duties on the public or require Malaysians to take action, it will give them more rights and transparency. MCMC deputy managing director (development) Eneng Faridah Iskandar explains that the Act is targeted at fighting specific harmful content, ensuring a safer environment for all users.

Regulating Harmful Content

ONSA requires social media companies to remove harmful content such as scams and child sexual abuse materials. This move aims to combat nine harmful content categories, including threatening or abusive words that may cause harassment, distress, fear, or alarm, and content promoting ill-will or hostile feelings among the public.

Preserving Freedom of Expression

The Act does not restrict freedom of expression, as it is designed to target specific harmful content. Eneng Faridah emphasizes that ONSA recognises legitimate use of social media, ensuring that educational purposes are protected. For instance, sharing awareness on scams or drug abuse would not be considered harmful content.

Parental Guidance

As parents, you can take steps to keep your children safe online. MCMC recommends safety controls, settings to control content access, clear guidelines on safe use, and mechanisms to report harmful content. Additionally, there may be safer default settings and stronger privacy protections for children using social media.

A Positive Use of Social Media

MCMC encourages Malaysians to continue using social media positively. Eneng Faridah highlights the importance of these platforms in fostering civil society, connecting people, and enabling communication. Social media also provides an income source for influencers and e-commerce opportunities, contributing to Malaysia's economy.

A New Era of Online Safety

By regulating social media companies under ONSA, MCMC aims to create a safer online environment for all Malaysians. With the recognition of legitimate use of social media and the targeting of specific harmful content, users can expect a healthier and more positive interaction on these platforms.
