The Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) is a pioneering medical research unit of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). Since its inception in 1991, TATRC has been at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to automate casualty care and optimize medical performance.
History
In 1991, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Goeringer was assigned as the project officer to develop a filmless medical diagnostic imaging system (MDIS). This project marked the beginning of TATRC's journey, which would eventually become a formal organization in 1993, known as the Medical Advanced Technology Management Office (MATMO). Under Lt. Col. Goeringer's leadership, MATMO pioneered the use of advanced technologies such as biomedical science, secure global positioning systems, wireless networking, data compression, and adaptable tactical mobile networks.
In the mid-1990s, TATRC continued to evolve, with Colonel Gary Gilbert taking over as director in 1996. During his tenure, the organization focused on health informatics, medical imaging, mobile computing, remote monitoring, simulation, and training. In 1997, Colonel Jeffrey Roller succeeded Colonel Gilbert and led the center until his retirement in 2006.
In 1998, MATMO was reorganized and renamed TATRC. Under Colonel Karl Friedl's direction from 2006 to 2012, the organization continued to promote organizations such as The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) and explored the use of virtual reality tools, biomaterials, and hospital-of-the-future concepts.
TATRC has been actively involved in various projects, including tertiary care telemedicine, which was supported from the Walter Reed Telemedicine Directorate. Between 1993 and 1996, this initiative was deployed for military medical missions in 12 countries. In 2020, TATRC responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by working on multiple projects.
Locations
TATRC is headquartered at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland, with two satellite offices: one at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, which focuses on mobile health; and another in Frederick, Maryland, which focuses on computational biology. The organization's main headquarters is located on Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD.
