Starting today, Google is rolling out an update that grants its powerful Gemini AI engine unprecedented access to third-party apps like WhatsApp and Messages, even if users previously restricted such interactions. But don't worry, you still have control over your app user experience – for now.
The tech giant recently sent an email notification informing users of the change, which included a link to a notification page that revealed some concerning details about how their data will be processed. The page stated that "human reviewers (including service providers) read, annotate, and process" the data Gemini accesses, but provided no useful guidance on preventing these changes from taking effect.
The email suggests that users can block individual apps from interacting with Gemini, but even in those cases, data is stored for 72 hours – a fact that raises serious concerns about app user experience. The lack of transparency around how to fully remove Gemini's integrations from Android devices only adds to the confusion.
It appears Google is intentionally vague about whether users can completely extricate Gemini from their devices, with one part of the email stating that "the changes will automatically start rolling out" today and give Gemini access to certain apps regardless of its activity status. Conversely, another section claims that if users have already turned off these features, they will remain off – leaving Android users wondering what's really going on.
Adding insult to injury, one of the linked support pages requires users to open a separate page to learn how to control their Gemini app settings. By accessing my own account's Gemini app settings from a computer browser, I found reassurance that no activity has been stored since I've turned off Gemini – but then saw another statement indicating that Gemini is only saving activity beyond 72 hours.
It's clear that the app user experience is about to take a significant turn for Android users. As we navigate this new landscape of AI-powered app interactions, it's essential to stay informed and proactive in managing our digital lives.
