This September, Microsoft is set to launch its highly anticipated Xbox-based game streaming service, revolutionizing the way gamers access their favorite titles. But when it arrives, Apple device users will be left out in the cold.

The service, which combines Microsoft's popular subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, with its "Project xCloud" streaming technology, promises a seamless gaming experience across devices. Users can stream over 100 games to smartphones and tablets, with progress made on those games reflecting on the Xbox console when picked up later. It's like having Netflix for games.

However, Apple's App Store policies are blocking the service from being available on iPhone and iPad users. According to an Apple spokesperson, the reason is that Microsoft isn't submitting each game on its streaming service to Apple's review process. "Our customers enjoy great apps and games from millions of developers, and gaming services can absolutely launch on the App Store as long as they follow the same set of guidelines applicable to all developers," said the spokesperson.

But why should gaming services be held to different standards than music and film streaming services like Netflix and Spotify? The answer lies in the interactive nature of games. Unlike music and film, which are consumed passively, games require user interaction, creating a unique experience that demands specific consumer expectations.

Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass has already gained popularity with over 10 million paying subscribers. Its combination with "Project xCloud" streaming technology is the next evolution of this successful service. The result is an app user experience that allows gamers to stream their favorite games directly to their smartphone or tablet for $15 per month, resuming gameplay where they left off on an Xbox console.

While Microsoft has pledged to continue working toward a solution for Apple device users, its ambitious plan faces a major roadblock without support for iPhone and iPad. The company remains committed to scaling cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass available on all devices, but for now, Apple device users will have to look elsewhere for their gaming fix.
