Zac's Community Update:

Are you tired of using apps that don't quite fit your unique needs? Essential Apps is here to change the game. Imagine having an app that creates personal tools tailored specifically for you, without the need for complicated interfaces or endless scrolling. This innovative approach to mobile technology is now entering its Beta phase.

What Does Beta Mean?

Essential Apps' Beta release marks a significant milestone in our journey towards creating personalized apps. As we expand access to a wider group of users, we'll be able to gather feedback at scale and refine the platform for a seamless experience. Thousands have already joined the waitlist, and we're excited to bring more people on board as we go.

How Do You Build Them?

The Essential Apps Builder lives within Playground, where you can describe what you need in plain language and our AI-powered tool creates it. The best part? When you update an app, only the specific parts change, ensuring your app stays stable and reliable over time. With just one tap, your new app appears instantly on your home screen.

What's Improved?

We've made significant improvements to the Apps Builder, including clearer publishing and update processes. You'll now see exactly what's live, in draft, or has changed, making it easier than ever to manage your apps. Plus, with better organization and dark mode support, you can work comfortably day or night.

About Playground

Playground is where creativity meets innovation. This web-based platform allows you to browse community creations, publish your own Essential Apps, and install them directly to your device. A native Playground app will soon follow, bringing all of Nothing's creative tools together in one place.

The Bigger Picture

Essential Apps is just one part of the larger Essential Suite of AI Tools, which also includes Essential Space, Essential Search, and Essential Memory. By capturing ideas quickly, giving you direct answers, and recalling helpful details, we're redefining how software adapts to your needs, not the other way around.

Why Phone (3) Goes First

Our early Beta release is exclusive to Phone (3) due to its powerful performance capabilities. As we refine the system, this device will help us validate behavior and iron out issues before expanding to other devices. Once stable, Essential Apps will roll out to Nothing and CMF devices running Nothing OS 4.0 and above.

What You Can Build Today

With Essential Apps, you can create location-based reminders, agenda views, meeting countdowns, and one-tap contact widgets, all with just three permissions: Location, Calendar (read-only), and Contacts. More capabilities are on the way, including camera and microphone access, network fetching, notifications, vibration, calling, and Bluetooth.

Visuals and Widget Sizes

Essential Apps support image uploads today, with JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP formats available. Icons, audio, and custom fonts will follow in a future Beta update. For now, widget sizes include 2x2 and 4x2, with the 1x2 and 4x4 sizes arriving soon.

When This Goes Public

Essential Apps will move to public release later this year once system integrations are stable, device compatibility is confirmed, and remixing apps directly inside Playground becomes possible. Throughout Beta, we'll continue to refine the platform with deeper system integrations, expanded design capabilities, and broader device support.

How to Think About Essential Apps

Essential Apps represent a new way of using your phone. Instead of opening apps and navigating menus, small personal tools stay visible, update in place, and respond to your context. Your home screen becomes more purposeful, making your phone feel like it's actually yours.

Some ideas will feel simple in Beta, while others might seem unfinished. That's okay – we're focused on reliability and learning how people use personal tools in everyday life.
