Last week, Unity's announcement of their new runtime fee sent shockwaves through the mobile game development community. The news only got worse when it was revealed that Unity had quietly altered their terms of service and began reaching out to clients, touting the benefits of switching to Unity/IronSource offerings. Needless to say, this move didn't sit well with AppLovin.
Unifying the Gaming Landscape
In response to the challenges posed by Unity's new fee structure, AppLovin is proud to introduce Project UniFree, a groundbreaking open-source project designed to ease the transition between game engines. By leveraging modern language models (LLMs) and existing tools like ChatGPT, we're working towards creating a seamless migration experience for developers.
Simplifying Game Engine Transitions
The current version of Project UniFree is a proof-of-concept that has already shown promising results. Our goal is to utilize LLMs to generalize and translate game engine concepts, making it easier for developers to switch between Unity and other popular engines like Godot, Cocos, and Unreal. With this tool, we believe hundreds of developers can avoid the tedious process of re-writing their entire game from scratch.
Automating Migration
While an auto-migrated project may not work out-of-the-box, Project UniFree's translated business logic, re-imported assets, auto-generated comments, and hints will significantly reduce the amount of time and effort required for migration. This means developers can focus on what matters most – creating engaging mobile games.
A Community-Driven Initiative
To make Project UniFree a reality, we need your help. Our open-source project is available under the MIT license on GitHub, and we're actively seeking contributions from the development community. Currently, our tool allows for translation of Unity C# to Godot GDScript or Unreal Engine C++ code. As the project evolves, we'll expand support to include other popular game engines.
