Mobile sports app development is all about creating an immersive experience for fans. In this case study, we'll dive into how our team designed and developed the ultimate match-day companion app, Tailgait, to help Buffalo Bills fans navigate Highmark Stadium with ease.
About Tailgait
On match days, finding essential amenities like restrooms, food trucks, parking spots, and merchandise shops around Highmark Stadium can be a real challenge for Buffalo Bills fans. That's where Tailgait comes in – a real-time, interactive mobile application that helps fellow fans locate these necessities. By allowing users to list their services or facilities, the app becomes a community-driven platform active on match days.
Goal of the Project
Our primary objective was to create an intuitive match-day guide for fans, ensuring they can navigate the stadium with minimal friction. To achieve this, we had to deliver:
- An interactive map that allows users to instantly locate restrooms, parking spots, food trucks, and merchandise shops
- Seamless vendor participation through simple upload features
- Live updates and moderation through a real-time admin panel
- Prioritize speed and accessibility by optimizing the platform for high loading speeds and minimal taps
Challenges
Designing a platform that can handle match-day frenzy presented some unique challenges. We had to:
- Design an event-based usage window with high load speeds, map refresh rates, and stability
- Create two different user journeys – one for fans exploring amenities and another for vendors listing their facilities
- Ensure real-time stadium navigation through accurate, up-to-date data
- Develop a scalable admin workflow for approving/rejecting submissions, managing categories, and enabling/disabling listings
Our Approach
To tackle these challenges, we employed the following approach:
- Discovery: We studied how fans behave during match days and navigated the stadium. This helped us understand their needs and preferences.
- Define: We designed a stable and intuitive admin panel that allows moderators to approve or reject submissions, manage categories, and monitor live content.
Design Highlights
Tailgait is designed to bring clarity, performance, and user-centric interaction during peak hours. Key design highlights include:
- An interactive map displaying key amenities – tailgates, food trucks, restrooms, parking, and merchandise
- A dual onboarding flow optimized for minimal taps, catering to both fans and vendors
- Clean typography, clear icons, and a visual hierarchy that helps users find what they need quickly
Final Product Showcase
Tailgait's evolution is ongoing, with new match-day features being rolled out rapidly as fan needs grow and stadium operations expand. The vendor upload flow is being refined based on real-time behavioral data, ensuring smoother submissions during peak hours. Our design system is also being extended to support upcoming modules, including vendor analytics, heat-map insights, and seasonal event categories.
The redesigned Tailgait platform has transformed match days into a seamless, organized experience, showcasing real-time amenities and empowering fans and vendors to engage effortlessly.
