Kia is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its latest flagship model, the 2024 Kia EV9. This three-row SUV boasts a range of impressive features that set it apart from other mainstream brands. The EV9's debut comes hot on the heels of Kia's successful compact crossover, the EV6.
Electric Mobility and Leading Technology
As Kia's new flagship, the EV9 is designed to redefine the automaker's focus going forward: electric mobility, leading technology, and sustainable materials. With its dedicated E-GMP platform, the EV9 offers an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of bidirectional charging, vehicle-to-grid functions, and high-speed charging that can add almost 150 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
Performance and Range
Depending on the market, the EV9 will be offered with a standard 76.1-kwh battery and rear-wheel drive or an upgraded 99.8-kwh battery available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The highest range will be achieved by the 99.8-kwh battery paired with rear-wheel drive, estimated to reach around 300 miles when measured by the EPA.
For added performance, Kia's own app store, Kia Connect Store, offers a Boost feature that adds extra torque to help deliver 0-62 mph acceleration in just 5.3 seconds. Additionally, a light pattern for the digital light panel will be available for purchase through the app store, allowing owners to customize their vehicle's appearance.
Advanced Technology and Safety Features
The EV9 also features an automated driver-assist feature, called Highway Driving Pilot, which ranks at Level 3 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability. This system can provide hands-off, eyes-off capability in certain conditions, relying on 15 sensors, including two lidar arrays.
Interior Space and Comfort
The EV9 measures approximately 197 inches in length, roughly the same size as Kia's Telluride. However, its packaging advantages mean a longer wheelbase, resulting in more interior space. The SUV offers seating for six or seven with a second-row bench seat or available captain's chairs that can swivel up to 180 degrees.
The first- and second-row seats can recline so passengers can relax while the EV9 charges. Both the second and third rows fold flat to create immense cargo space, perfect for road trips or daily errands.
Sustainable Materials and Premium Features
Up front, the dashboard features a 5.0-inch display flanked by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen, all housed under a single pane of glass. Premium options include massaging seats, a 14-speaker Meridian audio system, and ambient lighting.
Kia has also incorporated sustainable materials in the cabin, such as those derived from corn, sugar cane, natural oils, and recycled PET bottles.
Availability and Pricing
The EV9 will start sales in selected markets in the second half of the year. Exact timing for the U.S. should be announced following the SUV's local debut scheduled for next week's 2023 New York auto show. Kia is also holding back on pricing information, though officials have hinted at a price gap similar to that of the Niro EV and Niro hybrid or the EV6 and Sportage.
With many more EVs planned in its lineup as part of its quest to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, Kia is well-positioned to revolutionize the electric vehicle landscape with its innovative technology and sustainable features.
