As the demand for AI chatbot experiences continues to surge, mobile apps are capitalizing on this trend by incorporating ChatGPT or OpenAI technologies into their offerings. According to data.ai, consumers have spent a staggering $14 million in the top 10 highest-earning apps that advertise their use of these technologies, with this figure expected to continue growing.
The Rise of AI-Powered Mobile Apps
In February 2023 alone, these 10 apps generated nearly $5.9 million in global consumer spending, representing an 11% increase from the average daily spend of $210,000 in January. This surge in demand can be attributed to the integration of "AI" features and references to prominent AI technologies like ChatGPT or OpenAI.
Driving Demand with AI Integrations
What's striking is that many of these apps saw a significant boost in consumer spending after incorporating AI features. For instance, the same group of apps saw only $1.6 million in global consumer spending in December 2022, which grew to over $5.9 million just two months later – a 3.7x increase. This trend is expected to continue as more mobile apps leverage AI to drive engagement and revenue.
Exceptions to the Rule
One notable exception to this trend is Pixelcut AI Photo Editor, which had been generating decent revenue before the launch of its "magic writer" copywriter tool that uses GPT in January 2023. Despite a slight dip in February, the app still managed to generate $813,000 in consumer spending.
Top-Earning Apps
The top-earning apps included in data.ai's analysis are Genie – AI Chatbot; AI Chat – Chatbot AI Assistant; AI Chatbot – Open Chat Writer; Apo – AI Personal Assistant; Chat AI Bot – Writing Assistant; ChatOn – AI Chatbot Assistant; AI Chat – Ask Anything; Chat AI – Ask Anything; and GoatChat. Notably, Genie has generated the most revenue this year, with $3.2 million in global consumer spending.
Keyword-Stuffing: A Winning Strategy?
What's interesting about these apps is that they're not trying to establish their own brand and identity to engage consumers. Instead, they're relying on keyword-stuffing their app titles to match search terms people are using when looking for an AI chatbot app. With the right keywords like "AI," "Chat," or "Assistant" driving downloads, it's clear that this strategy is working.
By incorporating AI features and leveraging popular AI technologies, mobile apps can drive engagement and revenue. As consumers continue to demand more AI-powered experiences, we can expect to see even more innovative applications of AI in the world of mobile apps.
