Mister Sushi, a Pacific Beach staple, has long been serving up delicious Japanese dishes to the San Diego community. But when it came time to revamp their online presence, they turned to PINT to build a website that would not only showcase their menu but also provide a seamless user experience across all devices.

To achieve this goal, PINT leveraged progressive web app (PWA) technology to create a website that is available on all devices without barriers, loads quickly and consistently, has offline capabilities, and can be added to the home screen. With a focus on accessibility, PWAs have become an ideal solution for restaurants like Mister Sushi looking to improve their online presence.

Challenge

The old Mister Sushi website was built using flash, resulting in frustrating errors for users trying to access the site. The restaurant needed a modern, user-friendly platform that would not only showcase their menu but also provide essential information about their location and story. Furthermore, they required stricter adherence to best practices and increased accessibility.

Technical Requirements

The new Mister Sushi website needed to meet several technical requirements:

  • Availability on all devices
  • Load quickly and consistently
  • Increased accessibility
  • Stricter adherence to best practices
  • Offline capabilities
  • Save to homescreen feature
  • Analytics implementation

To address these challenges, PINT employed a range of innovative technologies.

Solution

PINT built Mister Sushi a new site using Progressive Web App technology, which provided a fast-loading, device-agnostic, and accessible website. The team utilized Google App Engine for hosting and deployment, ensuring near 100% uptime without extra ongoing maintenance.

Another key feature implemented was service workers, a browser API that allows fine-grained control over cached content. This means that once a user has visited the site, repeat visits have near-instantaneous load times and are available offline.

The "add to homescreen" prompt was also included for Android devices, allowing users to access the site anywhere, anytime. If the site's content is updated, the PWA will download the new content once connected to the internet.

To track user behavior and provide insights on website performance, Google Analytics was installed on the Mister Sushi site. This will help the restaurant identify its target audience and monitor their behavior on the site to inform any updates.

Editor

PINT is currently working on a "Daily Special" section of the Mister Sushi site that will showcase a featured item of the day. To make this feature easy to update, the team is building a decoupled content management system that requires no knowledge of coding at all.

Once logged in, users can use the editor to type and style content without having to know HTML, CSS, or any other coding languages.

Results

Since launching the new site, Mister Sushi has seen a significant increase in mobile traffic, with close to 70% of their visitors coming from mobile devices. The site's Lighthouse score is an impressive 100, demonstrating its exceptional performance, accessibility, and adherence to best practices.
