For our team at Pizza Place Conspiracy, creating Warp Deer was an exciting journey that combined addictive gameplay with innovative design elements. In this article, we'll take you through the story of how we brought this engaging mobile game to life.

The idea for Warp Deer began with a driving exam in Finland, where one of our team members, Panu Palm, encountered a simulation game featuring a sudden deer materializing on the screen. This unexpected challenge sparked a personal competition among us to create a game inspired by this experience. We drew inspiration from popular mobile games like Temple Run, Subway Surfers, and Crossy Road, incorporating their addictive features into our own vision of a fun, challenging runner game.

Using Unity as our game engine allowed us to leverage rapid prototyping, streamlining the development process. Our programmers, Anssi and Tommi, focused on building the mechanics first, while I (Tomi) took charge of creating the graphical assets using VoxelShop, a freeware voxel editing program. This resulted in colorful, cheerful graphics that perfectly suited our game.

To bring the game to life, we integrated the models into Unity, optimizing the assets and animating them by hand. Our musician, Panu Palm, crafted a great soundtrack featuring retro-style tunes, while his friend AP Lammi contributed sound effects for the title sequence. We also incorporated Google Play Games integration for leaderboards and achievements, which proved essential in enhancing user retention.

At its core, Warp Deer is about self-control and endurance. The game design is simple – survive until you get squashed – but the warp technique allows players to bypass traffic jams, making it a challenging yet addictive experience.
